Growing up in a musical family in San Diego, Gayle was fascinated with music from the start, recording little songs with her sisters from the age of 3. Skidmore has written over 2500 songs since she began songwriting at the age of 8. She also plays over 20 other instruments, including the mountain dulcimer, banjo, folk harp and balalaika.
